Craft Beer Entrepreneurship and Panel Discussion with Brewery Owners
Nov 6, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm
With funding from the Kauffman Foundation for Entrepreneurship, Drs. Carolyn Keller and Saran Ghatak studied the various models of craft beer businesses across the state of New Hampshire and the region. In this workshop, they will discuss their findings. The discussion will be broadened to include features of successful craft entrepreneurship more generally. Finally, participants will consider which “next steps” might make the most success in their entrepreneurial process. The workshop will be followed by a panel of New Hampshire craft brewery owners, Nicole Carrier, co-founder and President of Throwback Brewery; Dave Currier, founder of Henniker Brewing Co.; Michael Hauptly-Pierce, co-founder of Litherman’s Limited Brewing Co.; Anthony Levick, co-founder of Granite Roots Brewery; and Carl Soderberg, founder of Able Abenezer. Afterwards, to kick off our ItoIHub activities that week, the Hannah Grimes Center warmly invites the audience to hang out with the the presenters and brewery owners to have a beer (of course).
About the Instructors:
Drs. Carolyn Keller and Saran Ghatak both teach in the Department of Sociology at Keene State College. As sociologists, they both have backgrounds in studying culture, organizations, and policy analysis. Working on a grant funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman foundation, they have interviewed over 50 craft brewers across the US. They are currently writing a book tentatively titled, “Crafting Cooperation: A New Business Model for the Twenty-First Century” with their findings.
About the Panelists:
Nicole Carrier, Co-Founder and President of Throwback Brewery
Nicole is our Marketing Guru, Chief Realist, and card-carrying M.B.A, handling marketing, social media, technology, and business strategy. Before starting Throwback Brewery, Nicole home brewed for over 10 years, but now mostly dreams up new recipes for Annette and team to expertly craft. Besides recipe development, Nicole’s favorite aspect of owning a brewery is getting to meet and interact with all of the amazing people in the community- from the farmers, to the chefs, to the fellow brewers, and, of course, Throwback’s amazing customers. Nicole also enjoys spreading the love of craft beer to more and more people – especially when she can get someone who didn’t think they liked dark beer to say ‘oh, I like it!’. Nicole has a B.A. from Dartmouth College in Economics and Math, and an M.B.A. from the Tuck School at Dartmouth. She is also a former IBM executive. She is currently President of the New Hampshire Brewers Association.
Dave Currier, Founder of Henniker Brewing:
Dave is proud to be the managing member of Henniker Brewing Company having founded the brewery in 2011 after years of planning. Dave has a wide range of experience in New Hampshire including being GM of Pat’s Peak, a NH State Senator, NH State Rep and starting Bound Tree Medical, which previously operated out of the current HBC facility prior to relocating. He looks to combine his vast business experience and ever growing love of craft beer to help HBC continue to grow across New England. His energy and enthusiasm are evident if you have ever been on one of his Saturday brewery tours! Outside of the brewery Dave enjoys golfing, boating and fishing on Lake Massasecum.
Mike Hauptley- Pierce, Co-founder of Litherman’s Limited Brewing Co.
Michael Hauptly-Pierce has been brewing for almost a decade. He grew up just outside of San Francisco, but moved to NH 20 years ago out of fear that California would fall into the ocean. He and his partner, Doc Jones, started formulating a business plan about 5 years ago, and opened their doors in April 2016. They specialize in IPAs, sours, and Belgian styles, and have a tasting room that can accommodate about 100 people. Michael is also co-host of The Tap Handle Show. He can usually be found working.
Carl Soderberg, Founder of Able Ebenezer
Carl is the founder of Able Ebenezer in Merrimack NH. He has served as Captain & Troop Commander with the US Army’s 1st Cavalry Regiment, managed rare-disease biopharma manufacturing, and has an educational background in the sciences & engineering. Carl is also a board member with the United Way of Greater Nashua, Merrimack Chamber of Commerce and Veteran’s Count. He enjoys the outdoors, reading, writing & storytelling, and debating the superiority of Star Trek over Star Wars. Cheers.
Anthony Levick, Co-Founder of Granite Roots Brewery
Granite Roots Brewing is a 2.5 barrel nano, craft brewery located in Troy, New Hampshire.
We strive to use locally sourced, sustainably farmed ingredients to brew our bold traditional ales and unique fruit beers, so that we may strengthen our community while sharing the Monadnock region’s diverse agricultural landscape in the tasting notes of each brew.
We believe a head brewer is a liquid artist of the senses and should operate in an environment of full creative freedom. Bryan is continuously perfecting Granite Root’s traditional ales while simultaneously experimenting with beers brewed with seasonally available ingredients from local farms.
The loosening of nano brewery laws in NH paved the way for us opening our doors on July, 25th 2015 in conjunction with Monadnock Berries, the family farm where we source our fruits from.
