Judy Wicks, a pioneering voice in the local economy movement for over thirty years, will deliver a keynote address on November 4, 2009 to commence the Keene State College Seventh Biennial Symposium "From Local to Global." Wicks will inspire individuals to reassess their everyday actions to break through conventional consumer and producer roles and create a more sustainable and humane economic structure. The talk will take place on Thursday evening November 4 at 8pm in the Mable Brown Room, Lloyd P. Young Student Center.
Wicks is the founder of Philadelphia's celebrated White Dog Café and an organizer of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) and the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia. She has received numerous recognitions and awards for the work she has done advocating for ethical and sustainable business practices and strengthening the local food movement.
This keynote address will serve as a springboard for the community discussion, "Keene: A Local Living Economy" on November 5, 2009, 8am - noon in the Mountain View Room at the Young Student Center with local entrepreneurs, community leaders, and engaged citizens. Through conversations, the collective wisdom of the group will emerge to fuel future collaborations and initiatives to build a stronger community and regional economy.
Key participants, including Judy Wicks, are Tom Wessels a terrestrial ecologist and professor at Antioch University New England, Dr. Margaret (Marge) Bruchac, historian and anthropologist at the University of Connecticut, who, as an Abenaki Indian maintains a well defined interest in the Connecticut River Valley, and Dr. Mike Welsh, professor in Political Science at Keene State College and Chair of Keene Master Plan Committee.
